Moonstones Gallery has carried the beautiful wooden kinetic sculptures of David Roy for nearly 20 years. David describes how he developed his art form below.

"Mechanics and motion have always fascinated me. During college I studied physics, engineering and chemistry to further my understanding of how things worked. I graduated with a degree in physics from Boston University in 1974. This intuitive understanding of motion and mechanics combined with the artistic influences of my wife, Marji, led me to the creation of kinetic sculptures.
Since then I have designed and handcrafted over 90 different limited edition and one-of-a-kind kinetic sculptures. I have exhibited in numerous juried, invitational and group events. My work is displayed in galleries and private collections around the world."

"The idea for Sun Dance came to me as I was working on Sky Dance. I was playing with the Sky Dance fan shaped carrying wheels when I noticed the way a fan seemed to spread and collapse when the wheels were oriented in the same direction. I went back to the computer and started exploring ways to use the "fan effect." A surprise spiral patterning effect showed up in the animations when I drew in a fixed orientation circular floating "bird" made up of arcs that, although thinner, matched the carrying wheel arcs.

I love "discovering" new visual patterning effects and end up spending many hours studying and staring when I find one. My understanding of the patterns then helps me to develop a mechanism to show them to best effect."

"Radiance creates a kaleidoscope of shifting patterning effects. The two 12-spoked patterning wheels are off balance so that they accelerate and decelerate with each rotation. They do this at different paces creating an ever-changing array of patterns. Eventually either wheel or both slow down enough, lose momentum, reverse direction, and trigger the drive mechanism. This action gives the wheels new energy and starts the variety of patterning effects all over again."

"The idea for Sky Dance came to me when I had both the Focus and Quest sculptures on the testing wall at the same time. Could I make a random "floating" sculpture with a simple central mechanism like the one I had developed for Focus? What would the motion be like?

A year and several prototypes later the result is Sky Dance. I'm very pleased with this sculpture. It has random, straight line and floating motion as well as some interesting overlapping optical patterns.

The biggest challenge with Sky Dance is showing all it does with an animation or video! Each patterning cycle, the time between "kicks" from the spring, is about 3 minutes long. Each cycle is different because it depends on the relative location and motion of the fan-shaped wheels when the "kick" happens.

The animation shows elements of one of my favorite pattern cycles, the fan shaped wheels move in opposite directions giving the "bird" piece a straight line motion. Eventually the back wheels slows down and starts rocking. The animation loops after about 30 seconds so it only shows a glimpse of what really happens."
